Statement by Heads and Representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches Assembled for the Celebration of the 1025th Anniversary of the Baptism of Russia26. July 2013 - 8:37
Heads and representatives of the local Orthodox Churches, who are assembled in Moscow for the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia, made a joint statement, which text was presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in Kremlin on 24 July 2013.
We, heads and representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches, who have come to Moscow on the occasion of the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia at the invitation of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, consider it our duty to raise our voice in defense of our Christian brothers subjected to persecution for their faith in various parts of the world today.
On 24 July 2013, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with a delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate which arrived in Moscow to participate in the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus.
The delegation consists of Metropolitan Emmanuel of France; archimandrite Bartholomew (Samaras), secretary general of the Holy and Sacred Synod; and archimandrite Bessarion (Komzias), director of the Patriarchal library.
On the feast day of Saint Olga Equal-to-the-Apostles, the great Princess of Russia, primates and bishops of local Orthodox Churches celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow
On the occasion of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria and All Africa, His Grace Patriarch Theophilos III of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, His Beatitude Catholicos-Patriarch Illya II of All Georgia, His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej, His Holiness Bulgarian Patriarch Neofit, His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus, His Beatitude Metropolitan Sava of Warsaw and All Poland and His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada celebrated the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy.
On 20 July 2013, His Beatitude Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington and Metropolitan of All America and Canada, arrived in Moscow to attend celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus.
Meeting the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America at Domodedovo airport were Metropolitan Pavel of Ryazan and Mikhailov; Archbishop Arseniy of Istra, the first vicar of His Holiness the Patriarch for Moscow; Bishop Kliment of Krasnoslobodsk and Temnikov; archimandrite Alexander (Pihach), representative of the Orthodox Church in America to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia; archpriest Nikolai Balashov, deputy chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR); archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations; and archpriest Georgy Roschin, representative of the World Russian People’s Council to the UN and a cleric of St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York.
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, who has brought a delegation of the Orthodox Church of Jerusalem to the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia. They met at the patriarchal and synodal residence in the St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow.
