Patriarch Porfirije: The significance of spiritual care for inmates is great
On 10 February 2025, His Holiness Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije presided over the Sixth Regular Meeting of Prison Clergy of the Serbian Orthodox Church with the Administrators of the Penal Sanctions Enforcement System.
The meeting was held at the Central Prison building in Belgrade, which houses the Belgrade District Prison and the Special Prison Hospital of the Republic of Serbia. Attending the meeting were His Grace Bishop of Toplica kyr Petar, coordinator of the Religious Charitable Guardianship; Mr. Dejan Carević, Director of the Penal Sanctions Enforcement Administration; chiefs from the Administration; facility wardens; and priests responsible for the spiritual care of inmates in the Republic of Serbia.
His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije emphasized the importance of the Church’s care for those who are imprisoned, referring to the Gospel words: “I was in prison and you came to Me” (Matt. 25:36). His Holiness also highlighted the Church’s longstanding willingness to voluntarily, through serving in prisons within the framework of legal provisions, reach out to those in the darkness of sin and carry them on Christ’s shoulders toward the light of life with God. His Holiness invoked God’s blessing upon the participants, who, following a report by the coordinator on achieved results and topics for improvement, discussed the necessary next steps in building effective care for inmates in the Republic of Serbia. His Holiness expressed confidence that religious service in prisons would continue to develop with patience, while the Director of the Penal Sanctions Enforcement System affirmed full support for all joint efforts.
