Patriarch Porfirije: Humbleness is a space of the explosion of freedom that God has given us
At the end of the Holy Liturgy, His Holiness the Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije turned to the new Hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church saying:
Brethren Hierarchs, brothers and sisters, by the providence of God, by the grace of the Holy Spirit and the agreement of the holy Fathers of the Assembly of our Local Church, we firstly chose, and thank God today we also consecrated Archimandrite Nektarije as the Bishop of Jegar.
You, Bishop Nektarije, have been collecting experiences from all over the world. You were born in Sarajevo, but you were educated and grew up in Sweden, studied in Russia and in Greece, visited many countries of Western Europe, learned the languages of other nations in addition to your own language, and we pray to God and we are sure that – as the apostles went to all four sides of the world, to the end of the ecumene, to preach Christ – the fact that you have experience of various cultures and various peoples will enable you, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, to teach the truth, the truth about Christ which is intended for everyone.
Together with the fathers from our holy Assembly, we pray that the Lord will give you a clear mind and a warm heart, and bodily strength so that you may follow the path of the Apostles of Christ, but also that the prayers of Saint Nektarios, whose name you bear, will be with you constantly so that from today and in the future you may build up the Body of Christ. May the Lord bless you! Pray for all of us! Take this scepter to feed the flock of Christ entrusted to you. Let it be support and strengthening for the obedient, and as for the disobedient and non-compliant ones – direct them with chastisement and gentle education, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Axios!
Having received the scepter – a symbol of the Hierarchical service, from the hands of His Holiness the Patriarch, His Grace Bishop of Jegar kyr Nektarije delivered the introductory sermon:
Your Holiness, brethren Hierarchs, priests, venerable monastics, Christ-loving people, dearest children… On this day, which is going to be a criterion by which everything in my further life will be evaluated, I remind myself of the words of the Holy Apostle Paul and I pray to live – no longer I, but Christ to live in me (Gal 2:20) and that despite all my infirmities I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). Complying with the Lord's will, I cry out fervently: I am your, Savior, save me! Help me do Your work shamelessly on earth.
"Behold the maidservant of the Lord!" the Immaculate cried out as she accepted to become an assistant in the Economy of the Salvation of the world. Taught by Her example that the secret of Salvation lies in obedience and that God loves those who modestly conduct His work, I bow my head before the will of God and stammer with love: Behold the servant of the Lord! May the prayers of the Mother of God come true with me, Lord!
His Grace concluded his address by expressing gratitude to His Holiness and the entire Pleroma of the Serbian Orthodox Church, then to his beloved family and numerous Hierarchs, clerics, monastics and laymen, to whom newly-consecrated Bishop attributed the merits for being appointed to this sacred and highly-responsible duty.
Give me, o Lord, diligent and worthy service in the rank of Hierarch, so that Your Church will never be ashamed of me, but that the joy of service and zeal for Your Home will not leave me until my last breath. Let there be infinite glory to the Triune God, Who called us from non-being into life to serve Him, to confess and love Him, aware that He first loved us (I John 4:19) and left us love as a means with which time is being designed, death abolished, eternal life acquired, and the only salvific truth that Love conquers all is being preached! Amen!
