On 23 September 2023, in the afternoon, His Holiness Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije visited the Serbian Herzegovinian village of Prebilovci and its church of the Resurrection of the Lord, with a crypt in which the relics of the Holy Martyrs of Prebilovci and Herzegovina are buried.
The village of Prebilovci is not only an all-Serbian but also a pan-Orthodox symbol of suffering and martyrdom but also a symbol of renewal and resurrection. In August 1941, the Ustaše carried out an unprecedented massacre of 826 out of a total of 994 Serbs, mainly women, children, and the elderly. Most of them were thrown into the Golubinka pit. With this massacre, 54 Serbian households in Prebilovci were permanently extinguished. Communist authorities concealed the truth about the scale of the crime, banned the extraction of the bones of Serbian victims from the pits, whose openings were even cemented in 1961. In the early 1990s, a church was erected, and the martyrs’ bones were extracted from the pits and buried in the crypt. The suffering of the martyrs of Prebilovci and Herzegovina was not thereby concluded. In June 1992, the Ustaše detonated the church and the crypt with the relics of the holy martyrs.
Through the efforts of the Bishops of Zahumlje and Herzegovina Atanasije, Grigorije, and Dimitrije, as well as the love of the pious Serbian people, the magnificent church of the Resurrection of the Lord was built according to the project by Dr. Predrag Rostić. Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije visited this church together with his honorable entourage.
– Let us pray to the Holy Martyrs of Prebilovci and Herzegovina to intercede for us before God, to grant us the strength to carry our cross, the cross of trials, which are at the same time a space and manifestation of God’s Grace. Let us pray to God that what the holy martyrs endured for their faith and the honorable Cross will never happen again to anyone, anywhere – Patriarch Porfirije conveyed on this occasion.
