For eight centuries, the Monastery of the Patriarchate of Peć has preserved beneath its vaults the sacred Throne upon which the successors of Saint Sava are enthroned and from which the Serbian Archbishops and Patriarchs have steered the ship of Christ's Church within the bounds of their canonical jurisdiction. Following the restoration of the unity of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1920, the tradition of enthronement upon the Throne of Peć was likewise revived as a visible expression of spiritual continuity with our God-bearing Archbishops and Patriarchs, from the granting of autocephaly in 1219 to the present day.
The enthronement of the first Patriarch of the restored Serbian Patriarchate, His Holiness Patriarch Dimitrije (Pavlović), upon the ancient Throne of Peć took place on 24 August 1924. He was followed by his successors on the Throne of Saint Sava: Patriarch Varnava (Rosić) on 6 July 1930; Patriarch Gavrilo (Dožić) on 2 August 1938; Patriarch German (Đorić) on 29 May 1960; Patriarch Pavle (Stojčević) in July 1994; Patriarch Irinej (Gavrilović) on 3 October 2010; and Patriarch Porfirije (Perić) on 14 October 2022.
