His Holiness Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije was ceremoniously welcomed on 4 November 2023, at the Monastery of Saint Nicholas in Machagai.

The Monastery of Saint Nicholas is the first place of worship ever built in Machagai, and local authorities have declared it a monument of special cultural significance. The first settlers, who in 1909 established an agricultural colony in the Chaco region of northern Argentina, were Serbians from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As intensive settlement continued with Serbian and Spanish emigration, Machagai gained city status in 1921. Today, with surrounding settlements, it has about 30,000 residents.

On the occasion of the arrival of the First Hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, a festive doxology was officiated with the prayerful participation of His Grace Bishop of Buenos Aires and South and Central America kyr Kirilo, members of the Patriarch's hierarchical entourage, clergy, monastics, and pious people.

The Diocese of Buenos Aires and South and Central America of the Serbian Orthodox Church was established in 2011. His Grace Bishop kyr Kirilo (Bojović) currently occupies the episcopal throne, with his See in the Cathedral church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Buenos Aires. The Diocese currently has parishes and missions in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.
