The law of Christ, the Cross, and the faith are an obstacle to those who establish the laws of this world

On 6 May 2026, the feast day of the Holy Great-Martyr and Victory-Bearer George – St. George’s Day, His Holiness Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije presided over the Divine Liturgy in the church dedicated to that great pleaser of God in Čukarica.

– We celebrate Saint George, who lives in the joy of the Lord, who lives in communion with Christ. He is our measure and criterion, even though, grounded in faith, he appeared to be a temporary loser; and yet Emperor Diocletian and all those like him are not examples for us to emulate. Let us know, therefore, that the law of Christ surpasses every law, that His rules surpass every rule that any man may establish, even the most perfect one, and let us know that the law of Christ and the rules of life which He established are not pleasing to the laws and rules established by men; they are not pleasing to the rules and laws of this life, and they often come into direct conflict with those laws – preached Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije in the magnificent church built between 1928 and 1932 through the generosity of the Belgrade merchant Mitar Jovanović, according to the design of the Russian architect Vasily Androsov, addressing the faithful people who filled both the church and the churchyard, and concluded:

– The law of Christ, the Cross, and the faith are an obstacle to those who establish the laws of this world, because such laws are established so that individuals and groups of people may achieve their own interests and goals – often goals that undermine the very purpose for which each one of us was created, that is, they undermine the one, unique, and only goal, namely our salvation, which is nothing other than communion with God and communion among brethren, and that is nothing other than the Church.

Concelebrating with the Primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church were: Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Časlav Marinković; Protopresbyters Goran Mišanović, Vitomir Kostić, and Dragan Vidović; Protodeacon Dragan Radić; and Deacons Vasilije Perić and Savo Topalović.

The celebration of the parish feast day was also a festive occasion for Mother Church to express gratitude to Mr. Vladan Janković, owner of the Gigatron company, Aleksandar Škundrić, Nenad Šakić, and Dušan Đorđević of Belgrade for the selfless love and zeal they had shown her, and especially for their exceptional contribution to the Church of the Holy Great-Martyr George in Čukarica.
